The Latest Canonization- Who is the Most Recent Saint-
What is the most recent saint? This question often piques the curiosity of many, as the Catholic Church continues to recognize and canonize individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary faith, courage, and holiness. The most recent saint, as of my last update, is Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. His life and legacy continue to inspire countless individuals around the world.
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati was born on May 5, 1901, in Turin, Italy. He was the second of three children born to Giuseppe and Elvira Frassati. From a young age, Pier Giorgio displayed a strong sense of compassion and a desire to help others. He was deeply influenced by his parents’ religious faith and the example of his older brother, who was a priest.
Despite his family’s wealth and his own promising academic career, Pier Giorgio chose a life of simplicity and service. He was a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order dedicated to the education and care of young people. He worked as a volunteer in a tuberculosis sanatorium, helping the sick and poor, and often walked long distances to visit the homes of the poor in Turin.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Pier Giorgio’s life was his ability to balance his spiritual life with his commitment to social justice. He was an ardent advocate for the poor and marginalized, and he believed that true faith should be reflected in one’s actions. Pier Giorgio’s compassion and dedication to helping others made him a beloved figure among his peers and those he served.
Tragically, Pier Giorgio’s life was cut short at the age of 24 when he died of pneumonia. His death, however, did not diminish his legacy. In fact, it only served to deepen the respect and admiration that people had for him. His life of faith, service, and dedication to the poor and marginalized resonated with many, and he became a symbol of hope and inspiration.
In 1990, Pier Giorgio was declared a Servant of God, and in 2002, he was declared Venerable. On May 17, 2015, Pope Francis canonized him as a saint, recognizing his extraordinary holiness and the impact he had on the lives of others. His feast day is celebrated on July 10th.
The canonization of Pier Giorgio Frassati as the most recent saint serves as a reminder of the importance of living a life of faith and service. His legacy continues to inspire individuals to reach out to those in need and to embody the values of compassion, humility, and justice. As we reflect on the life of this remarkable young man, we are reminded that holiness is not just a concept; it is a call to action that can be lived out in our daily lives.
