Creating your own living room curtains can be a rewarding and cost-effective project. Choosing the Fabric

Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Once you have chosen your fabric, it’s time to measure and cut it. To determine the length of your curtains, measure the height of your window from the top of the window sill to the desired length you want the curtains to hang. Multiply this measurement by two to account for the fullness of the curtains. For example, if your window is 8 feet tall, you would need a fabric that is 16 feet long to create full, flowing curtains.
Next, measure the width of your window and add a minimum of 2-3 times the width to achieve the desired fullness. For instance, if your window is 5 feet wide, you would need a fabric that is at least 15-20 feet wide. Keep in mind that wider fabrics can be purchased in widths of 54-108 inches, so you may need to piece together multiple widths to achieve the desired length and width.
Assembling the Curtains
After cutting your fabric, it’s time to assemble the curtains. Start by hemming the top and bottom edges of the fabric to prevent fraying. You can do this by folding over the edge and sewing it in place or by using a serger. For the sides, you can either leave them raw or add a facing to create a finished look.
To create pleats or gathers, pin the fabric in place at regular intervals along the top edge, then sew a line of stitching just below the pins. Pull the thread tight to gather the fabric, and then secure the gathers with a knot or a safety pin. Repeat this process along the entire top edge of the curtain.
